We are seeking 'Pigeon Parents' to sponsor a pigeon. There are 4 pigeons in need of parents. Pigeon parents include: Australian Associated Press, Thompson-Reuters and two anonymous pigeon-poet lovers. If you're interested download the PDF or email Johanna for more details.
Eight Australian poets from city, regional and rural areas in nationally will write an original poem to fly in a NSW pigeon race. The poems are to be strapped to the ankle of a professional racing pigeon to home along the NSW South Coast.
The poets, none of whom will have previously worked with The Red Room Company will attend the race and read to a live audience.
A virtual form guide will be invented for the project’s duration to document the race details online as well as the history and form of the pigeons, the poets and their poems. Spectators and participants will have the opportunity to take part in a 'sweep'.*
The race will be filmed from a ‘pigeon cam’ perspective, revealed on the Race day.
This project will team up with local pigeon associations and take a unique look at the relationship between sport, poetry and gaming.
The project was partly inspired by the work of Australian poet, Robert Adamson, who is one of the 8 poets in this project and the only poetry directly invited to participate.
The Sweep*:
1. There are eight birds in the race, each with their own original poem attached to their leg.
2. Punters can view the bird profiles, and their associated poem, online.
3. Punters then choose their bird and poem, and this 'wager' (which is your registration and costs nothing!) will be processed and you will be issued with a receipt.
4. Online selection closes the Friday before the race, but 'wagers' can still be made on the day.
5. After the race, those punters who picked the winning poem and bird all go into a super draw to determine the Major Prize winner, who receives the inaugural Pigeon Poetry Sculpture and poetry books from all states and territories.
6. All others who picked the winning bird and poem receive a prize of a single poem.
Our sweep system will be online in June 2008, once all poets have been selected.
