Brook Emery has worked as a swimming instructor, beach inspector, removalist and, for a long time, as an English and History teacher. He lives in Sydney and is studying for a doctorate in Creative Arts at Newcastle University (2003). He has been the NSW editor of Blue Dog. His awards include The Arts Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Prize for Poetry, 2001; The Newcastle Poetry Prize, 1999 and the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards, Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry, 2004 for which he was shortlisted. Brook has been interviewed for Red Room Radio and has written the ‘Notes to Poets’ which features in Red Room’s Papercuts education program. A river winds through Pitt Street Mall, speckled fish swim eagerly to work, children leap, pick marshmallows from the trees; everyone stops to say hello; cars dance, bikes ring silent bells and the sky is filled with clowns, dancing.
